An interesting quote: Joseph Kosuth

"The power of the work we see in museums is exactly this. It is the authenticity of the cultural production of a human being connected to his or her historical moment so concretely that the work is experienced as real; it is the passion of a creative intelligence to the present, which informs both the past and the future.  It is not that the meaning of a work of art can transcend time, but that a work of art describes the maker's relationship to her or his context through the struggle to make meaning, and in so doing we get a glimpse of the life of the people who shared that meaning. [A] work of art must be so singularly the concrete expression of an individual (or individuals) that it is no longer simply about that individual, but rather, is about the culture that made such expression possible."

  1. Immediately made me think of the latest art shows newsletter from Prestons. There are a lot of chances coming up to go see how other contemporaries are expressiing themselves and culture and trying to bring us some of their meaning. I wish some of these shows were before this final project. I need some more inspiration.

  2. This quote makes me think of what our final project is supposed to be. Especially when he says, "A] work of art must be so singularly the concrete expression of an individual (or individuals) that it is no longer simply about that individual, but rather, is about the culture that made such expression possible." I feel that this tells us that we cannot intentionally create something contemporary or that shows our time, but that it happens through our execution of our expression as individuals of this time. If that makes any sense.

  3. I think that this quote really adds to the understanding of our final project.

  4. The quote was great because just by looking at the picture and not the painter/drawing/etc.. we are able to see the time people were living in. I love drawings like that because it makes you think what the people/items in the picture are doing in real time.

  6. This post was a help in understanding the final project assignment. I am still researching to see what is the best way for me to go with this project. Thanks Shawn for the art show posts. I definitely want to see the Penny Sisto quilts. I have been debating as to this is the way I want to go with my final project.

  7. Art is a little more than that to me though. It may show the cultural aspects in which people live, but everyone interprets reality differently, and everyone shows their thoughts of reality differently as well. There may be similarities in some pieces, but not in all art as a whole or as a whole to specific regions. Am I thinking to hard? Maybe the quote is saying that, just not to me. I don't think that all art necessarily becomes about more than what one individual is perceiving. There are people who may be able to relate with the artist, or who are drawn to specific works of art, but that doesn't mean that those pieces of art summarize a culture.

  8. I think we have to step back a moment and realize what Kosuth is saying. He is talking about museums and Works of Art. Some of these works really do help us understand History and culture regardless of the artist's intended meaning. What does it take for a museum to want your work hanging in it's gallery preserved for future generations? Narrative, Innovation, Skill? 200 years from now they might marvel at how anyone could create such fine works of art in something ancient like Photoshop the same way we marvel at paintings done with tempera on wood. We might be called the Digital Movement of the 21st Century someday. Now if we can just figure out how to step up and represent...

  9. I wonder what Jo would say about people like:

    Damien Hurst
    Richard Prince
    Jeff Koons
    James Turrell

  10. I'm not sure what Kosuth would say, but I can imagine. You might be able to glean some insights by reading his article in the May 1982 issue of Art Forum, page 61, "Portraits...Necrophilia Mon Amour." Kosuth was a conceptual artist who also wrote art theory, so I would think he'd be both critical and supportive of the artists you mention.

  11. This quote is certainly an interesting one. I don't know if this can apply to every single instance of any kind of art, unless the very existance of art is a cultural phenominon. Then again, I'm not a psych, educational, or sociology major :D
