BBC Drawing Line of Inquiry

This short video is part of a series, the British Broadcasting Corporation's The Secret of Drawing, presented by Andrew Graham-Dixon, that explores how drawing has shaped our lives and it's relevance to our world today. In this part, what's engaging is how clearly connected the drawing process and its importance are to all the visual arts, as well as to the sciences.  In the whole series, which I hope to get posted over the next month or so, our understanding of nature as well as our perspective of reality are explored through a variety of folks throughout history who used (and are using) drawing to expand their awareness (and our awareness) and their sensitivity (and our sensitivity) to the vastness of that creative knowledge. Enjoy.

  1. This was an interesting clip and an insight into what a genius daVinci was. I particulary like the fact that the Dr. did actual drawings with the patient's own blood. That's what I call getting into your work.

  2. I thought you'd enjoy this, Susan, given your background. What I liked about it is that the Doctor had a vision of what he wanted and sketched it out before he started hacking on his patient...although he clearly had started hacking.

  3. I would think that if you were a surgeon, and were going into an intense surgery, like heart surgery, that drawing it the surgery before hand could kind of be like guided imagery medatation, not only could he see it in his mind, he could see it on paper, reinforcing the process for him.
